Education

2005 – Bachelor of Science in Architectural Engineering – North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University, Greensboro, North Carolina.

2006 – Master of Science in Civil Engineering – North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University, Greensboro, North Carolina.

Professional Registrations

Engineering Intern – North Carolina

Experience

As a Project Engineer, responsibilities include the preparation of structural design calculations and review of technical drawings, as well as assuring that the final product is accurate and coordinated with the drawings of other disciplines involved in the project.

Design experience includes cast-in-place concrete, reinforced and unreinforced masonry, structural steel, light gage steel, structural aluminum, fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) repair/strengthening, and timber.

Niels has also conducted comparative wind load/strength analyses of aluminum and vinyl window systems for evaluation of water intrusion, investigated unreinforced masonry infill wall panel strength behavior, and evaluated aluminum curtainwall system designs.

Research

Evaluation of out-of-plane load distribution and wall strength for concrete masonry wall systems with widely spaced vertical reinforcement.  Finite computer models and mathematical expressions based upon full scale laboratory test specimens were developed to predict/describe the mechanism of horizontal load transfer in partially reinforced masonry walls.

Description of work history

August 2006 to Present – Staff Engineer – Engineered Concepts – Greensboro, North Carolina.

Preparation of structural design calculations and development of contract documents for contractors, architects, and industrial clients.
